Use our browser tips to surf the web more efficiently. Take control of the Web with these Internet Explorer browser tips to quickly and easily master the interface between you and the Internet. These tips and tricks are for your consideration and information only and you'll be using them at your own risk.
Start me up. If your start page is a graphics intensive masterpiece and you have a dial-up modem - there is a better way. A start page should load quickly and be a key starting point for finding information. We love Google because they provide extremely relevant search results and their page loads in the blink of an eye. To change your start page, click Tools, then select Internet Options. Now in the General tab, you can type in the site you wish to make your start page. Or simply visit that site and then click Use Current.
That's an interesting page. Organizing your bookmarks is important. However, occasionally you'll find a page that you want to keep on your screen to look at later but does not warrant a bookmark. Simply press Ctrl-N. A new duplicate window will open and you can continue surfing while keeping the other window accessible for later.
Right click your way to an easier Internet. You have discovered a very resourceful page that has many links going to sites you want to check out. Right clicking on those links will allow you to Open in New Window and keep your resourceful page on screen for continuous easy access.
Move back and forth with ease even if you don't have a programmable mouse. Use your keyboard and press Alt with the Right Arrow key to move forward and Alt with the Left Arrow key to go back. If you have a mouse with a scroll button, some users like to program this as the back button for surfing.
Find the needle in the haystack. Ever come across a page with an enormous amount of text. Then you spend a long time scrolling up and down trying to find what you really need. Boost your chances of finding the info. The solution is to press Ctrl-F and this will pop-up a find box where you can type in a word to search for and highlight on the page.
Pop-up nightmares. Have you ever been barraged with pop-up windows from a web-site that seem to have no end. One after another, they pop-up faster than you can shut them down. Instead of fumbling around your screen searching for the close X's - you can simply and calmly press Alt-F4 and all the windows will close. Hopefully, more people will learn this trick so these hostile web-sites will not profit from taking our computers hostage. The new version of Internet Explorer is scheduled to have a built-in pop-up blocker which is great news. There are many programs available online to prevent evil popups. Unfortunately, they can be just as evil by tracking your surfing habits or even writing over the text on Web pages. An example would be - you're reading a government site about credit card fraud and the word credit card would be made into an advertising link wherever it appears on the page.
