Boosting your RAM
The term "RAM booster" refers to optimizing and making better use of RAM cache memory, like what RAMrocket is used for. This is a temporary storage space where data is accessed at high speeds and can be optimized in numerous ways to act as a ram booster. Without one of these programs, the best you can do is to manually adjust the VCache settings in the system.ini file which may help a little. However, the amount of physical RAM and the many different variables caused by different configurations make it difficult to pinpoint the exact values required.
RAM Boosting Software is the best solution for those looking for extreme memory speed increases. Be careful though - Not all of these software programs work as advertised and some may actually hinder performance or contain hostile add-in code that may trigger pop-up advertising. If you can't afford a good RAM Optimizer, you could try this tweak. It may or may not provide a small RAM speed increase depending on your PCs configuration. Don't expect miracles with this tweak, you'll need to download a good RAM optimizing program for serious speed increases.

System.ini Tweak
Access the system.ini file in Windows 98 by clicking on Start, then click Run. Now type in sysedit and click OK. This brings up your System Configuration Editor which includes system.ini among others. Highlight the system.ini window and thoroughly search for the following listing...

MaxFileCache=8192
If it's NOT there, you could take the bold move and add it. Do NOT make any other changes within this file (unless you know what you're doing) or you may crash your system and have problems booting up again.
Here are a few general values to consider...
If you have 64MB of Physical RAM
[VCACHE]
MaxFileCache=8192
If you have 128MB of Physical RAM
[VCACHE]
MaxFileCache=16384
If you have 192MB or more of Physical RAM
[VCACHE]
MaxFileCache=24576
When you have carefully checked to make sure everything is correct, you can click File and then Save to record the changes. Don't forget to bookmark this page before you reboot, you may need to return here if you did something wrong.
